VOLKSMARCH

What is Volksmarching you ask?

A volksmarch is a non-competitive 3.1 mile (5 kilometer) or 6.2 mile (10 kilometer) walk. It's not a pledge walk, it's not a race, it is a fun activity you do with a club, with your family, with your pet, or all by yourself. Volksmarching got its name from its origins in Europe. Today there are thousands of volkssport clubs around the world, allied in the International Volkssport Federation, the IVV.

Castroville has it's very own Volksmarch Club, AVA-939. Each year Castroville offers a Year Round Event as well as a Once a Year Event. Anyone is welcome to come to Castroville and walk either of our events. Be sure to stamp your book for IVV Credit. If you are not a member of the American Volksport Association and would like to become a member you can visit their website at www.ava.org for all the information on how to sign up. Non-members are more than welcome to walk!

Year Round Event

Our Year Round Walk features a 5km and 10km walk through historic Castroville. Enjoy a stroll through the historic district and view the beautiful homes built in Alsatian style around the mid to late 1800s. The route meanders past historic landmarks and sites, a timeworn cemetery, through many tree-covered streets, and through the scenic Regional Park. The walk is flat except for a few gentle rolling up and down grades and is suitable for strollers. Use good judgment and watch for cars when crossing HWY 90. The Trail Rating is 1.

Starting Point: Sammy's Restaurant at 202 Hwy 90 E, Castroville TX 78009

Fees: $3 per person whether receiving IVV credit or not.

Once a Year Event

This year marks the 9th year Castroville has held an Annual Volksmarch Event and we are excited to have you get involved. The route is considered easy and is mostly on city sidewalks and low-traveled city streets. Back again this year is the inclusion of a 1 mile walk through beautiful Castroville Regional Park. Several other points of interest will be along the route including historical homes, the scenic Medina River, the Steinbach House which was relocated from Alsace France and much more! The walk is noncompetitive and you may walk, jog or run. It is open to all and families are encouraged to participate. Everyone must register and carry a start card and turn it in at the Finish.
